Himalayan rock salt comes from northern Pakistan from the area called the 'salt chain', not far from the Himalayan mountains. It is a natural rock salt that formed when the prehistoric seas evaporated about 250 million years ago. This was long before the Indian Plate moved north from the subcontinent and collided with Asia, creating the Himalayan Mountains. The real salt rocks range in color from pure white to beautiful pale pink to dramatic deep red, all depending on the iron oxide content.
